In December 1960, a 12-year-old boy named Howard Dully became one of the youngest patients

In December 1960, a 12-year-old boy named Howard Dully became one of the youngest patients ever to receive a transorbital lobotomy — a procedure now remembered as one of the darkest chapters in medical history. His stepmother insisted that Howard was “difficult” and possibly schizophrenic. Most teachers and doctors disagreed. But one man—Dr. Walter Freeman, the self-proclaimed “father of the lobotomy”—was willing to proceed. With his father’s consent, the boy’s fate was sealed. On December 16, Howard was sedated using electroshock. Freeman then inserted an orbitoclast—a sharp metal instrument resembling an ice pick—through each eye socket, tapping it with a hammer to break through the thin bone behind the eyes and into the brain. He then “swirled” it to sever the neural pathways of Howard’s frontal lobes. When Howard awoke, he was feverish, bruised, and empty. “I was like a zombie,” he later said. The surgery had stolen his sense of self. He was soon cast out of his home and spent year...

In 2015, a woman from Stockholm, Sweden, struck up a relationship with 38-year-old Martin Trenneborg.

In 2015, a woman from Stockholm, Sweden, struck up a relationship with 38-year-old Martin Trenneborg. The duo chatted over the phone, during which Trenneborg claimed that he was a rich American stockbroker based in London. The woman was impressed. She invited Trenneborg over to her flat on the 10th of September, 2015. They spent the evening chatting, and the woman agreed to have a second date with Trenneborg. On the 15th of September, the woman invited Trenneborg over to her flat once again. When she opened the door, Trenneborg presented her with champagne and chocolate-dipped strawberries. The duo sat down on the couch, and began to eat and drink. Trenneborg was not actually an American stockbroker. He had a successful career as a doctor, which was just as impressive. However, there was a reason that Trenneborg had lied about his true identity. Trenneborg had drugged the strawberries with the powerful sedative, Rohypnol. He marked the drugged ones by drawing on the stem leaves, s...

This CCTV image shows three year old Kaylee-Jayde Priest standing quietly beside her mother in the hallway of their apartment building. It is one of the last known images of Kaylee before she died later that same day in May 2020. Hours later, Kaylee was found unresponsive in her bedroom. Despite emergency efforts, she was pronounced dead. Medical experts later told the court that her body showed signs of repeated harm and extreme suffering, described as catastrophic. Those responsible were the two people meant to protect her. Her mother, Nicola Priest, and her partner, Callum Redfern, were both charged and found guilty of manslaughter. During the trial, prosecutors revealed messages between the couple that treated harm as discipline. The injuries that ended Kaylee’s life were inflicted in the hours before she died. Instead of calling for urgent help, the adults left the apartment to get food and continued using social media while Kaylee lay injured inside her own home. Kaylee died in t...

On this day 1991, Cameron Todd Willingham’s Texas home caught fire while his wife was out shopping for Christmas; his three children were killed while he managed to escape with minor injuries. Investigators fixated their eyes on Cameron, and questioned him as a suspect. While Cameron maintained his innocence, giving every proof to exonerate himself; prosecutors drilled him harder. They claimed he had murdered his three children because he never wanted them; they relentlessly held unto this vague proof. Arson investigators who were sent to look into the fire were quick to conclude the fire had been intentionally started, some pattern they found on the floor and the rate the fire burned were the reason for arriving at this conclusion. Even his wife, Stacy believed he could not do such a thing to his children as he loved and over pampered them. Stacy said she was sometimes physically abused by him, but his children were dear to him. Cameron was subsequently given the death sentence for ki...

This man woke up from a coma just long enough to solve his own murder.

This man woke up from a coma just long enough to solve his own murder. Daniel Waterman was in a horrific car accident with his girlfriend. The car had slammed into a tree at high speed. When police arrived, the girlfriend was crying. She claimed it was a tragic accident, that she lost control on a curve while swerving to miss a deer. She walked away with minor injuries, but Daniel was crushed. He was rushed to the hospital with massive head trauma and fell into a coma. Doctors told the family to prepare for the worst. They said he would likely never wake up. After several months, against all odds, Daniel opened his eyes. He couldn't move much, and he was weak, but he was desperate to speak and whispered the truth about the crash. He told them it wasn't an accident. They had gotten in an argument during the drive. He revealed that in the moments before the impact, his girlfriend had intentionally accelerated. He said she looked at him, said she was going to kill them both, and j...

Remembering Dandara dos Santos — A Life That Inspires Change

Image
Remembering Dandara dos Santos — A Life That Inspires Change On February 15, 2017, Brazil lost a bright soul too soon. Dandara dos Santos, a 42-year-old transgender woman from Fortaleza, faced unimaginable violence. Her story shocked a nation and sparked conversations that continue today about safety, dignity, and the rights of transgender people. Dandara lived her life with courage, authenticity, and resilience, navigating a world that often failed to protect her. The attacks she endured highlighted a painful reality: transgender people in Brazil face extraordinary risks simply for being themselves. Her passing was tragic, but it became a powerful call to action. Activists, human rights organizations, and communities around the world have invoked Dandara’s memory to push for justice, stronger protections, and awareness about the violence and discrimination that transgender individuals continue to face. Today, Dandara’s life is remembered not for the cruelty she suffered, but for the c...

Image
The stains in those photos are from normal vaginal discharge (leukorrhea).  The cervix and vagina naturally produce this clear/white fluid daily to clean the area, maintain healthy pH (3.8–4.5), lubricate, and fight infections. It contains mucus, dead cells & bacteria.  When it dries on fabric, oxidation + acidity turns it yellow/brown—super common, especially mid-cycle or pre-period. It's a healthy sign, not dirt or poor hygiene.  Varies by hormones, ovulation, pregnancy. If smelly, itchy or heavy, see a doctor.

The Last Photo a Hiker Took Before a Deadly Bear Attack

The Last Photo a Hiker Took Before a Deadly Bear Attack A hiker took this photo of a giant black bear on his cell phone moments before it chased and mauled him to death. Darsh Patel was hiking with four friends in New Jersey in 2014 and used his cell phone to take this picture of the bear in the woods — before it killed him. The phone was later found in the woods, with a bike mark through it. Patel’s final photo shows the 300lb bear moving towards fatally mauling him — in what police said was a rare attack. Hiker photographs bear just before fatal grizzly attack The area of Denali National Park where a bear killed a man Friday is closed "until further notice."  A southern California man killed by a grizzly bear in Alaska’s backcountry was shooting photos of the animal that killed him just moments before the attack, a National Park Service official said Sunday. The bear that killed Richard White, 49, was still with his body when rangers found him in Denali National Park on Sat...

The Nazis had a secret plan known as Operation Greif.

Image
The Nazis had a secret plan known as Operation Greif. German soldiers wore American uniforms and drove stolen US jeeps to fool the enemy. Their objective was to confuse the Americans by switching road signs and cutting telephone wires. Since they were dressed in incorrect uniforms, appeared in battle were not treated as regular prisoners in the event of a capture. A soldier who got caught in his own uniform would often be sent to a prison camp, but these men were considered spies. There were three men, Schmidt, Billing and Pernass, which were caught and after a very quick trial, were executed on the spot in the cold. The scariest occurred on December 23, 1944. The men were lashed to wooden posts in a Belgium courtyard. An American firing squad was on hand and a med. officer was present to confirm a dead body. In a famous picture Wilhelm Schmidt hangs limp on the ropes after the shots. The above picture depicts a severe reality of what spies face.

Panic in the Air as Student Pilot Is Forced to Land Plane Alone After Flight Instructor Jumps to His D+ath Mid-Flight A routine training flight in Argentina ended in tr@g£dy after a flight instructor allegedly jumped out of the aircraft midair, leaving his student to land the plane on her own. The instructor, identified as Leandro Andrés Bertazzo, was conducting a training session on Saturday with his 22-year-old student, Rosario, when he reportedly told her, “You know what you have to do, carry on.” According to prosecutors, Bertazzo then removed his headset, unfastened his seatbelt, opened the aircraft door and jumped from the plane, d¥ing instantly. Despite being left alone and in a state of shock, Rosario remained calm and successfully landed the aircraft without assistance. The director of the Flying Parrot Córdoba flight school, where Bertazzo worked, said there had been no indication that the instructor was planning to take his own life. He had reportedly completed ano...

A substitute teacher in Indiana pleaded guilty after being accused of sending multiple nude photos to a middle school boy every time she took a shower. Cassidy Carter was sentenced to two years in jail after she pleaded guilty to one count of battery resulting in moderate bodily injury, according to WXIX. Carter, who was 21 years old while working as a substitute at South Dearborn Community School Corporation, sent photos to a 14-year-old student, according to a criminal complaint. Court records cited by the outlet show that the student told a school resource officer, who then informed the principal about what happened on December 1, 2023. The student said the relationship started in November of that year after becoming friends on Snapchat. The victim said that the substitute would send him nude photos every time she went to take a shower, according to court records. The documents also noted that he said she would send the photos late at night and also noted that she told the boy sh...

The Babi Yar Massacre — September 1941 A gorge outside Kyiv, Ukraine, became one of the darkest symbols of the Holocaust. Over the course of just two days — September 29 and 30, 1941 — nearly 34,000 Jewish men, women, and children were murdered by Nazi Einsatzgruppen units, aided by local collaborators. Forced to march to the edge of the ravine, the victims were ordered to undress and surrender their belongings. Then, in groups, they were led to the brink and shot at point-blank range. The bodies fell into the chasm below — layer upon layer — until the gorge itself became a grave. The massacre was carried out with chilling precision and speed. Entire families vanished together. Within forty-eight hours, the Jewish population of Kyiv was almost completely wiped out. In the months that followed, Babi Yar continued to claim more lives — Roma people, Soviet prisoners of war, Ukrainian nationalists, and others — as Nazi occupation forces used the site for further executions. For years after the war, Babi Yar remained shrouded in silence. Under Soviet rule, its victims were rarely acknowledged as Jews, and no memorial stood to mark the atrocity. It wasn’t until decades later that survivors, poets, and historians fought to bring the truth to light — to give names, faces, and dignity back to those who perished. Today, Babi Yar stands as both a memorial and a warning — a reminder of how swiftly humanity can descend into cruelty, and how long it can take to confront that truth. It is not only a story of unimaginable horror — but also of memory delayed, grief unspoken, and the enduring duty to remember.

Terrifying footage: A lion attacks and drags away an elderly man. That's ridiculous. 67 is not that old. He should have been able to run faster than that, especially since he's the safari owner and deals with nature and these animals all the time. Limpopo, South Africa. The man attacked was Mike Hodge, a 67-year-old British wildlife park owner who had raised the lion from a cub.   A staff member shot the lion dead. Hodge survived and recovered

This photo shows Italian General Alexandro Luzano standing above a slaughtered Serbian child in front of a school in Prebilovci. The letter he sent to Mussolini after this crime has been preserved in the military archives: "Dear Duce, My boundless devotion to you, I hope, entitles me to deviate in some way from strict military protocol. That is why I hasten to describe to you an event that I personally attended three weeks ago. While visiting the districts of Stolac, Capljina and Ljubinje (between 60 and 130 km north of Dubrovnik) - I learned from our intelligence officers that Pavelic's Ustashas had committed a crime in a village (Prebilovci) the day before, and that when it became known , the surrounding Serbs to be upset again. I miss the words to describe what I found there. In the big school classroom, I found a slaughtered teacher and 120 of her students! No children were older than 12! Crime is an inappropriate and naive word. It overcame any madness! Many had their hea...

Lviv Pogroms: Jewish People Chased and Brutally Murdered by Men and Youth Armed with Clubs, 1941

Lviv Pogroms: Jewish People Chased and Brutally Murdered by Men and Youth Armed with Clubs, 1941 Woman chased by men and youth armed with clubs, Medova Street in Lviv, July 1941. Chased by youth armed with clubs, this woman is fleeing from a “death dealer” whose left leg can be seen at the left-hand edge of the photograph. The Lviv pogroms were the consecutive massacres of Jews living in the city of Lwów (now Lviv, Ukraine), perpetrated by Ukrainian nationalists (specifically, the OUN), German death squads (Einsatzgruppen), and urban population from 30 June to 2 July, and from 25 to 29 July, during the German invasion of the Soviet Union. Ukrainian nationalists targeted Jews in the first pogrom on the pretext of their purported responsibility for the NKVD prisoner massacre in Lviv, which left behind thousands of corpses in three Lviv prisons. The subsequent massacres were directed by the Germans in the context of the Holocaust in Eastern Europe. On the morning of 25 July 1941, the...
December, 1930 — deep inside Straight Creek Mine in Bell County, Kentucky, the mountain closed without warning. Rock thundered down, sealing five miners beneath tons of earth and leaving only silence where voices had been moments before. Company officials surveyed the damage and reached a cold conclusion: the tunnels were too unstable to reopen. The mine would be sealed. Five men would remain below. Above ground, families gathered in shock, grief already being prepared for them like an unavoidable ceremony — until one woman refused to accept the ending others had chosen. Her name was Big Ellie Sizemore, thirty-four years old and known throughout the camp for both her height and her resolve. Her husband Tom was trapped below, and leaving him there was never an option she considered. Ellie gathered other miners’ wives and mothers, and together six women walked toward the dark entrance carrying whatever tools they could find — kitchen spoons, coal shovels, even a washboard pressed in...

Thomas Kozak was 18 years old on December 6, 1907, when the Monongah Mine exploded at 10:28 AM. Thomas had been married for one year and his son was 6 months old. He kept the baby’s photo in his breast pocket behind a piece of oilcloth to keep the coal dust off. The explosion killed 362 men that day, the worst mine disaster in American history. Thomas was in a side tunnel with 15 other men when the roof dropped. The main air shaft was blocked. The timber holding up what was left of the ceiling was cracked and groaning. The foreman, Mr. Walter Finch, age 67, yelled, “If that beam goes, the air pocket goes and we all suffocate!” Thomas looked at the beam, then at the photo of his son. He was 18. He was married. He was a father. He got under that beam. He put his back against it and his feet against the floor and he held. He told the men, “Dig.” For six hours Thomas held 900 pounds of broken timber and rock while the other 15 men used picks and their hands to dig through the collapse t...

I lived in China for many years and my wife is Chinese.  Most people born in the last few decades in the West don't seem to realize how badly the Japanese treated the people they occupied, or even that they waged an imperialist war against other Asians in the first place.  Japanese pop culture is so beloved and ubiquitous that no one seems to want to acknowledge it. It seems like ancient history to us, but a lot of people in China act like it happened two weeks ago. The Nanjing Massacre (1937) Also known as the Rape of Nanjing, this horrifying event happened during the Second Sino-Japanese War. For six weeks, Japanese soldiers committed mass murder, torture, and rape in China's then-capital. Around 300,000 people were slaughtered—men, women, children, even infants. Many were executed en masse, while others were mutilated or burned alive. This remains one of the most brutal war crimes ever recorded. A true nightmare in human history. Pictures nested in the comment sec...

A photograph taken in Poland in 1946 captures a chilling moment that many wish had never existed.

A photograph taken in Poland in 1946 captures a chilling moment that many wish had never existed. Several Polish police officers carry the lifeless body of a woman whose name had become synonymous with terror. She was known as Becker—a woman remembered not for compassion, but for the fear she brought into the walls of a Nazi concentration camp during World War II. To countless prisoners, she wasn't just a guard. She was a nightmare in uniform. Survivors described a place where cruelty had no limits, where mercy disappeared behind barbed wire, and where every day could be their last. Becker was accused of participating in that brutality, becoming one of the faces of a regime that turned unimaginable suffering into routine. When the war ended, there was nowhere left to hide. She was arrested, brought before a court in Poland, and forced to face the evidence of her actions. The verdict was swift. The sentence was death by hanging. The haunting photograph was taken shortly af...
