I lived in China for many years and my wife is Chinese.  Most people born in the last few decades in the West don't seem to realize how badly the Japanese treated the people they occupied, or even that they waged an imperialist war against other Asians in the first place.  Japanese pop culture is so beloved and ubiquitous that no one seems to want to acknowledge it.


It seems like ancient history to us, but a lot of people in China act like it happened two weeks ago.



The Nanjing Massacre (1937)

Also known as the Rape of Nanjing, this horrifying event happened during the Second Sino-Japanese War. For six weeks, Japanese soldiers committed mass murder, torture, and rape in China's then-capital. Around 300,000 people were slaughtered—men, women, children, even infants. Many were executed en masse, while others were mutilated or burned alive.

This remains one of the most brutal war crimes ever recorded. A true nightmare in human history.

Stroop to his Commanding Officer, and was introduced as evidence to the War Crimes trials in Nuremberg in 1945. After the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, the Ghetto was completely destroyed. Of the more than 56,000 Jews captured, about 7,000 were shot, and the remainder were deported to killing centers or concentration camps. This is a view of the remains of the ghetto, which the German SS dynamited to the ground. The Warsaw Ghetto only existed for a few years, and in that time, some 300,000 Polish Jews lost their lives there.
