On a Friday afternoon in February 2012, nine-year-old Savannah Hardin was caught eating a chocolate candy bar at her home in Etowah County, Alabama. Her grandmother, Joyce Hardin Garrard, decided she needed to be punished.


Garrard forced Savannah to run laps around the yard of the family's rural home as punishment for eating the candy. Witnesses said she was made to run and carry firewood and sticks around the yard for hours. Her stepmother Jessica Mae Hardin was present and did not intervene. By the time Savannah's father Robert Hardin could make it back to the house, his daughter was on life support. She died three days later. 


Joyce Hardin Garrard was charged with capital murder and convicted. She was sentenced to life without parole. Less than a year into her sentence, Garrard suffered a heart attack minutes after being visited by members of her family. She was airlifted to hospital and placed on life support. She died in prison in February 2016. 


Savannah's stepmother Jessica Mae Hardin was originally charged with felony murder. Prosecutors noted that the investigation showed she had been extremely intimidated by Garrard to the point of fearing for her own safety. She pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of aggravated child abuse and was sentenced to three years, receiving credit for time already served.
