Katie Stubblefield was just 18 years old when her life changed forever. In 2014, while living in Mississippi, she attempted to take her own life using her brother’s hunting rifle. The devastating injury destroyed most of her facial structure, leaving her without much of her nose, jaw, or face. Despite the severity of the trauma, she survived after emergency doctors worked for hours to stabilize her.


For years afterward, Katie lived with extensive medical complications and underwent numerous surgeries while doctors explored the possibility of a full facial transplant. Her case eventually reached specialists at the Cleveland Clinic, one of the few medical centers in the world capable of performing such a complex procedure.

In May 2017, when she was 21 years old, Katie underwent a groundbreaking surgery led by a team of more than 40 medical professionals. The operation lasted roughly 31 hours and replaced nearly 100 percent of her facial tissue, including her scalp, forehead, eyelids, nose, cheeks, upper and lower jaws, teeth, and portions of the facial muscles and nerves. With the transplant, she became the youngest person in the world to receive a full face transplant.

Recovery required months of rehabilitation as doctors monitored the transplanted tissue and helped her relearn essential functions like speaking, swallowing, and making facial expressions. Over time, Katie regained significant movement in her face and was able to return to parts of daily life that once seemed impossible.

Her story later drew international attention through medical journals and media coverage, highlighting both the extraordinary advances in reconstructive surgery and the long road patients face after such life-changing procedures.
