Man Kills Wife, Kids, then Himself. 

Houston police say a prominent local restaurant owner, her husband, and their two young children were discovered shot to death inside their River Oaks home on Monday.

The victims were identified as 39-year-old Thy Mitchell, co-owner of popular Montrose spots Traveler's Table and Traveler's Cart, her 52-year-old husband Matthew Mitchell, their 8-year-old daughter Maya, and 4-year-old son Max. FOX 26 Houston and KHOU reported that officers arrived around 5:30 p.m. Monday after a babysitter and a family member requested a welfare check because they had not heard from the family since the night before.


Evidence at the scene led police to conclude that Matthew Mitchell shot the three other victims before turning the weapon on himself. No motive has been released, and authorities have not commented further on what may have led to the deaths.


The couple built a name for themselves in Houston's food scene after opening Traveler's Table, drawing on their shared passion for travel and global flavors. Thy, who grew up in Houston as the child of Vietnamese immigrants, worked in her family's restaurant during her school years and later earned degrees from the University of Houston and Penn State. Matthew had a background in journalism overseas and in the pharmaceutical industry before switching to the restaurant world. The pair appeared together in a 2021 episode of Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives, and their business was well-known locally for dishes inspired by international trips.

Thy also ran a fashion line called Foreign Fare aimed at comfortable travel wear. The restaurant community has expressed shock over the loss, with Traveler's Table posting a statement of support for the greater Houston hospitality group while asking for privacy as they grieve.

In a post the day before the welfare check, a photo showed Thy and her and daughter Maya getting fitted for dresses ahead of a family wedding.
