DAUGHTER OF WOMAN WHO DIED AFTER COFFEE SHOP FIGHT CLAIMS POLICE USED AI TO ALTER VIDEO

The daughter of a 75-year-old Indiana woman who died after a confrontation inside a Tim Hortons is now accusing police of using artificial intelligence to alter surveillance footage released to the public.

Anita Grayson collapsed and later died following a violent altercation at a Tim Hortons location in Fort Wayne on May 13. A few days ago, police released surveillance video showing Grayson allegedly initiating the confrontation by lunging toward a young employee and pulling out a chunk of the worker’s hair during a dispute over a drive-thru order.

However, Grayson’s daughter, Tawnda Grayson, now claims the “full footage” released by authorities was manipulated in an effort to make it appear that her mother was the aggressor.

“They’re trying to cover it up,” Tawnda told the Daily Mail, alleging investigators are attempting to “put the blame on my mother” rather than pursuing charges against the employees involved.

According to Tawnda, an anonymous source initially sent her footage that she says appeared to show her mother being struck first by workers before being pushed to the ground. After backlash online and calls for the employees to face charges, Fort Wayne police decided to release the complete surveillance footage, which appeared to show Anita Grayson attacking first.

Tawnda now alleges that version of the footage was doctored using artificial intelligence. She also claims police warned her ahead of time that the full video would show her mother “was at fault.”

The Allen County Coroner’s Office has not yet officially ruled on Grayson’s cause or manner of death, though preliminary findings reportedly found “no significant contributory injuries.”

Meanwhile, the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office says no charging decision will be made until all evidence connected to the investigation has been reviewed.

A press conference was held Friday outside the Tim Hortons location, where Grayson’s family appeared alongside civil rights activist Rev. Carlton A. Lynch, who is helping organize her funeral and advocating on behalf of the family.

The family also gathered Saturday at the Allen County Courthouse in downtown Fort Wayne as calls for further investigation into the incident continue.

BACKSTORY:

Authorities say Anita Grayson stormed into the Tim Hortons in Fort Wayne shortly after 8 a.m. on May 13 and began berating a 17-year-old employee about her order.

Surveillance footage (in comments) later released by the Fort Wayne Police Department allegedly shows Grayson pointing and yelling at the teenage worker as the store’s 20-year-old shift manager stepped in and told her to leave.

Police said the manager briefly touched Grayson after she moved toward the younger employee.

According to investigators, Grayson then pushed the manager and punched her in the face hard enough to scratch her and knock off her glasses.

As tensions escalated, the manager pushed Grayson back before Grayson allegedly shoved her hand into the manager’s face, leading to a physical fight that ended with both women on the floor.

Police said Grayson grabbed the manager by the hair, pulled her to the ground, and rolled on top of her while continuing to hold onto her hair.

“Two Tim Hortons employees moved in and attempted to separate them but struggled to get the shift lead’s hair out of Grayson’s hand,” police said. “During the struggle, Ms. Grayson pulled a chunk of hair from the shift lead’s head leaving a raw area on the top of her head.”

After the fight ended, employees returned behind the counter while Grayson sat down at a table and made a phone call, investigators said.

About 10 minutes later, Grayson reportedly laid down on the floor and became unresponsive.

Paramedics attempted lifesaving measures at the scene before Grayson was transported to a hospital, where she later died.

Her official cause of death has not yet been released.

Grayson’s daughter later told local media that her mother suffered from congestive heart failure and had recently been wearing a heart monitor.

“You should not enter a coffee shop for a coffee and a doughnut and come out unalived. That is diabolical,” her daughter told WPTA.

The Fort Wayne Police Department said it decided to release the surveillance footage after what it described as a “dangerously false narrative” began spreading online through partial clips that only showed the physical fight and Grayson collapsing afterward.

According to preliminary findings from the Allen County Coroner’s Office, there were reportedly “no significant contributory injuries” found during the initial examination.
