Toddler Forced to Eat Drywall and Diaper.
Indiana police say a 2-year-old boy died from severe malnutrition and dehydration after weeks of neglect in his family home, with an autopsy showing he had eaten pieces of drywall, paint chips, spackling, and diaper material in what investigators believe was a desperate attempt to stay alive.
Trevor Reichard-Hayes, 39, called 911 on March 31st and reported that his son Erik Reichard was unresponsive. His wife, Katherine Carter, 31, had found the child and carried him downstairs, according to the police affidavit. Paramedics tried CPR at the scene, but the boy was pronounced dead. He had already been deceased for several hours, and the parents told investigators they last saw him alive the night before around 11 p.m.
The autopsy found Erik weighed only about 15 pounds, appeared extremely skinny, and had more than 40 sores or bug bites on his body.
A search of the home turned up filthy conditions in the rooms where the children stayed, including feces on the floors, scattered drywall and paint debris, dirt, torn diaper pieces, and insects everywhere. In contrast, the couple’s own bedroom was clean and uncluttered, police noted. One training toilet in the kids’ area had sat uncleaned with waste for days or weeks.
The Indiana Department of Child Services removed two other children from the home. On April 3rd, Reichard-Hayes and Carter were arrested and charged with murder.
