On October 21, 2011, police in Michigan stopped a disoriented 87-year-old man who couldn’t recall the date, only to find over 440 pounds of c*caine in his car. He was Leo Sharp, one of El Ch*po’s top dr*g couriers.

A WAR VETERAN TURNED DRUG DEALER....

Leo Sharp (1924–2016), born in Michigan City, Indiana, was a decorated World War II veteran who earned a Bronze Star for combat in Italy. After the war, he became a renowned horticulturist and daylily hybridizer near his Indiana farm, registering nearly 180 cultivars. Enthusiasts flocked to his Brookwood Gardens operation, where one award-winning purple-pink variety still bears his name: Hemerocallis 'Siloam Leo Sharp'. 

In his mid-80s, facing financial troubles with the flower business, Sharp known to the cartel as "El Tata" (Grandpa) began working for a Sinaloa Cartel branch tied to Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán. Leveraging his elderly, unassuming appearance and clean record, he transported massive cocaine loads in his Lincoln pickup truck from the U.S. border to Detroit. Cartel ledgers showed he moved over 1,100 kilos more than a ton in 2010 alone, often 200–250 kilos monthly, earning over $1 million that year while shuttling millions back south. He operated undetected for nearly a decade.

On October 21, 2011, at age 87, Michigan State Police stopped him on I-94 near Ann Arbor during a DEA operation. Officers found 104–200 kilos about 440 pounds of cocaine worth millions hidden in the vehicle. Sharp initially claimed coercion but later pleaded guilty to conspiracy in 2013.


Sentenced on his 90th birthday in 2014 to three years in federal prison, he called it a "death sentence" and threatened suicide. His defense cited dementia and poor health. He served just one year before compassionate release in 2015 due to terminal illness. Sharp died at home on December 12, 2016, at 92. His story inspired Clint Eastwood’s 2018 film The Mule, though the movie fictionalized family estrangement and other details for drama.
