Following the defeat of World War II, the Nuremberg Trials were conducted in which the highest-ranking members of the Nazi regime were tried. They all knew what was coming.
Majority of them remained silent and took little. but there was one desire of some of the military leaders.
Such men as Wilhelm Keitel and Alfred Jodl had requested to be executed by a firing squad. They thought that getting shot was a good death to a soldier. Hanging was punishment to them on the criminals of the world
The court did not agree. The judges said no every time. They wished to make it abundantly clear that these men were not honorable but guilty.
When their dying hours were near at hand, many of them requested to have a priest visit them. Even the ones who had turned a blind eye to religion, desired a final prayer. Even their attempt to get some peace before they die.
A plain last meal was provided to them- meat, gravy, cabbage, and potatoes. They had no choice in the food. Nevertheless, the majority of them were never hungry.
What they desired, actually, was silence.
They were sitting, quiet and solitary with their thoughts.
And when the last came it was too late to ask forgiveness of many.
Others had their final words to talk of Germany or their leader.
Ultimately, despite the imminent death, a lot of them clung to the same beliefs
